Over the course of 34 games played during their regular season, the Pella Christian Eagles volleyball team, when asked in postseason meetings, mentioned their game early on in the season against Dowling Catholic, the number four team in Class 5A at the time, as the most memorable match of the 2012 season. At the time of that game, the Eagles were 1 – 7 on the season, after having a tough schedule to start their year. Head coach, Cindy Nikkel, said that her girls laid it all out on the court that game, and just really enjoyed themselves, which ended up being a common theme for her Eagles team the whole rest of the way.
“When you know you’re playing some of the best teams in the state, it’s just fun to know that you can battle like that,” Nikkel said. “We ended up splitting with them, one game apiece. Then, the third game was just to 15 points, and it was a nail biter. We ended up losing 15 – 13 to the fourth rated team in 5A. I think you can’t get much better with that kind of competition and you know you’re playing somebody good like that, and you walk away with your head high. It just gave us so much more confidence into the next matches of that tournament.”
At the conclusion of the school year, the Eagles will lose five seniors.
