The Lady Dutch basketball team lost a lot of seniors after the 2011-12 season, a campaign that saw them go 13 – 10. Fourth year head coach, Jerod Garland, tells KNIA/KRLS Sports, that they didn’t just lose talent with the departing seniors, but they also lost leadership, so early on, he will be looking to see who will rise to the occasion for his Pella High girls team both on and off the court.
“We’re hoping that seniors step up,” Garland said. “When you become a senior, it’s a different role, so we’re hoping that some of our seniors will take this opportunity and run with it. Whether that’s leading, or whether your role is to be a lock-down defender, or be an outside shooter, whatever that is, we’re really hoping that people step up this year.”
Garland also said really only two returning players had any varsity experience last year, and those two are Allie DeMeulenaere and Sheldon Rozenberg. He also hopes that his team gets better each passing month of the season. The first test for his Lady Dutch basketball team will be opening night at home against Ballard this coming Tuesday starting at 7:30 p.m.
