It was a nail-biter, but the Melcher-Dallas Saints girls’ basketball team pulled away in the final seconds to defeat the Pleasantville Trojans, 50 – 47 last night. The Trojans got off to a quick 12 – 2 lead after one quarter, and would take a ten point lead during several points in the second half, but the pesky Saints would keep marching forward. Kennedy Core for the Trojans had her biggest play of the game with 40 seconds left in the fourth quarter; stealing the ball and laying it up and in for a 47 – 46 Pleasantville lead, and that’s when the Saints came up with their biggest shot of the night, a three by MacKenzie Suntken giving the Saints the lead for good at 49 – 47, and a later free throw made it 50 – 47. Core would try three times to tie the game up with a three, but could not find the bottom of the net. She would finish with a game high 28 points, while Maddie Harken added 10. With the win, the Saints are 1 – 1 on the year, while the loss drops the Trojans to 0 – 3. Over on the boys’ side, Pleasantville easily handled the Saints’ boys, winning by a final score of 72 – 52. The Trojans had a 34-point lead several times in the second half when head coach Tom Wilkins took his starters out. Dillon Lauer for the Trojans had 23 points, making his first seven shots from the field, while Josh Luna led both teams in scoring for Pleasantville, adding 27 of his own. The Trojans’ boys are 1 – 0 on the year, while Melcher-Dallas starts at 0 – 1. Pleasantville will be at Central Decatur for a girls/boys doubleheader on Friday, and the Saints’ teams will be at Moravia.
