The Melcher-Dallas Saints and Wayne Falcons girls basketball teams have two very similar teams. Each team only features one senior returning starter, and both teams lack a lot of height in the post. Both teams met last year, with the Falcons taking a 41 – 33 victory in late November of 2011. Wayne finished the season with a 7 – 16 record, as the Saints ended at 9 – 12. Melcher-Dallas head girls basketball coach, Jon Suntken, said that it’s pretty cut and dry what is going to win this opening night game for his team.
“Defense,” Suntken said. “The key of the game, my whole philosophy has always been if you hold your opponent under 50 points, you give yourself a good shot to win. The flipside of that is that you better score more than 50 to get there. Really, our defense is going to have to step up.”
Again, interesting to note, both teams finished with less than 50 points in that game last November. The varsity tip-off game between Melcher-Dallas and Wayne is at 7:45 p.m.
