In an early Heart of Iowa Conference girls/boys doubleheader, the Gilbert Tigers will host the PCM Mustangs on the basketball court later tonight. For the Mustangs girls, they are coming off a close loss to Nevada last Tuesday, 50 – 38. The PCM girls had a little trouble shooting the ball, making less than 33 percent of their shots and not draining a single three. For Gilbert, they’ve played two games already, losing to Panorama, but coming back to beat Colfax-Mingo exactly one week ago. Looking at the boys’ side of things, PCM is fresh off a return to Des Moines in the state tournament, and are looking to get back there this season. Mustangs’ head coach, Fred Lorensen, told KNIA/KRLS Sports, that the keys to beating the boys of Gilbert are the same keys he has in place each and every game.
“Well, our keys are pretty much the same all the time,” Lorensen said. “There’s three things we always try to do. Number one, we’ve got to take care of the basketball. If you throw the ball to the other team, that’s not going to be a good thing for anybody, so we certainly don’t want to attempt to do that. Obviously, being good defensively is a key, and the third thing is rebounding. We think you have to rebound on both ends of the floor. If we do those three things, take care of the ball, guard people, and rebound, we feel we’ve got a great chance to win.”
PCM beat Gilbert twice last season in Heart of Iowa Conference play. The Tigers’ boys are coming off a 10 – 13 year, and feature a varsity squad comprised of five seniors, four juniors and three sophomores. The girls’ game tips off at 6:00 p.m., and the boys’ match starts at around 7:30.
