Finishing the 2011-12 season with a 14 – 8 record, Little Dutch basketball head coach, Mark Core, and the rest of his coaching staff have had some work to do heading into this upcoming season. The Pella High boys team graduated several seniors and a lot of height. Gone are players like Schyler Kane, who was 6’2”, Jake Wassenaar at 6’3”, and Jace Versteeg at 6’4”. The athletes that are back for Core this season haven’t seen much varsity playing time, either.
“We really have very little returning experience,” Core said. “Nathan Clayberg was basically our tenth man last year. He’s our top returning player in terms of game experience. Those are things that you don’t really work on necessarily, so then it goes back to us just taking who we are, and what we have, and making the most out of it.”
The Pella High boys basketball team will have a big test to start their season, as they play Albia next Friday on November 30, and then host reigning champion Mount Pleasant the very next day.
