The experienced members of the Pella Christian Eagles girls basketball team may have gotten into early foul trouble in the first half, but the younger gals stepped up big to propel them to a 56 – 46 season opening victory over Albia last night. Eagles head coach, Kevin Van Maanen, said that his sophomores really stepped up big for his team when they needed them late in the first half.
“I would say the second quarter, my young kids coming in, my sophomores, Hannah [Beltma n], Autumn Vos, Morgan Anderson, Tessa Howerzyl and [junior] Lauren Jungling,” Van Maanen said. “Those five in the second quarter; the game was tight in the first quarter and they pulled away and got a ten point lead for us at halftime. I thought my young kids really did the job for us in the second quarter.”
Leading the way in scoring for the Eagles was Lauren Jungling with 19 points, including four field goals from the perimeter. Paige Engbers contributed 17 and Tessa Howerzyl added 11. Pella Christian is picking up where they left off last year, starting this season with a 1 – 0 record, and will have a nice, lengthy break before their next game on December 1 on the road at Roland-Story.
