The peace and quiet of Melcher-Dallas was disrupted about 9:00 yesterday evening by a suspect fleeing Marion County Sheriff’s Deputies. Marion County Sheriff Ron Goemaat tells KNIA/KRLS News that a deputy pulled over a vehicle for a routine traffic stop south of town at G76 and 50th. The male driver of the vehicle did not have a driver’s license, and when informed by the deputy that the vehicle would have to be towed, the driver allegedly assaulted the deputy by kicking him. The suspect then retreated to the vehicle and a chase began, ending when the suspect’s vehicle struck a tree. He was then apprehended with the help of a second deputy. The suspect suffered injuries in the accident, and was transported from the scene to Knoxville Hospital and Clinics with the assistance of Melcher-Dallas Fire and Rescue and Columbia Rescue. The name of the suspect has not been released, and charges are pending. The Iowa State Patrol assisted at the scene. The Marion County Sheriff’s Deputy involved was not seriously injured in the incident. KNIA/KRLS News will provide more information as soon as it becomes official.
