Thursday night’s basketball games at Pella Christian were not for the faint of heart, as both games went down to the wire. On the girls’ side, the Eagles led by as much as 14 points in the third quarter, but PCM would come crawling back, getting to within one point at the end of three periods. After only committing six turnovers in the first half, the Eagles were forced into 17 over the final 16 minutes, which allowed the Mustangs to be in the game until the final buzzer. The game was tied at 44 with two minutes to play, when Paige Engbers drained the biggest shot of the night to make it 46 – 44. The scoreboard would remain unchanged the rest of the way, as the Eagles held on for a 46 – 44 victory to move to 4 – 0 on the season. Cori Uitermarkt had another big game, scoring 12 points, while Abbi Gilson for the Mustangs led all scorers with 14. Over on the boys’ side, the game was as advertised, a close affair that wasn’t decided until the final seconds. PCM had a 36 – 25 lead at the half, but the Eagles would come storming back to within three heading into the fourth. The Mustangs would take several two point leads down the stretch, but the Eagles would have the answer each time down the court to tie it up, until Pella Christian’s star freshman, Sebastian Baugh, came up with a huge three to give them a one point lead at 55 – 54. Unfortunately for the Eagles, those were the last points they would put on the board, as PCM would score seven straight to end the ball game and win 61 – 55. Coltin Collins led all scorers with 16 points, while Ethan Kain and Dillon Bruxvoort for PCM each had 15. PCM now sits with a 5 – 0 record, while Pella Christian falls to 3 – 1. The Mustangs don’t have much time to celebrate, as they’re right back to action tomorrow night at Roland-Story for a doubleheader, while the Eagles’ basketball teams will split up, with the boys playing Saturday at Albia, while the girls play Monday at Martensdale-St. Mary’s.
