Pella Christian got out to a quick start in Little Hawkeye Conference play sweeping Oskaloosa last night 60-48 in the girls’ game followed by a 63-49 boys’ win. The Eagle girls were making shots from all over the court early as they drained five first half three-pointers and Cori Uitermarkt made her presence known inside scoring 12 first quarter points on her way to a 22 point, six rebound performance. Oskaloosa fought back to within five points with just over two minutes remaining in the game, but Pella Christian got their offense flowing again when they needed it most, converting some late free throws and coming up with some big offensive rebounds to pull away and ice the game down the stretch. Eagles coach, Kevin Van Maanen, said overall he was pleased.

The Eagles boys held just a 14-9 lead after one quarter but were able to get things rolling in the second quarter, outscoring Oskaloosa 18-9 to take a 32-18 lead at halftime. Pella Christian also dominated the boards out-rebounding the Indians 49-19. Coach Larry Hessing said the kids adjusted well after the first quarter. Austin Vermeer led all scorers with 18 points, Jared Van Wyk contributed 13 while Blake Riggen added ten.

Both teams improved to 3-0 on the season and are off to a 1-0 start in Little Hawkeye Conference play. The Eagles’ basketball teams will return to action tomorrow night when they host PCM in non-conference action. You can hear both games on 92.1 FM KRLS and kniakrls.com.
