Jacobsma Wants Better Time Management Late in Games

Having leads late in games has been a small problem for the Central’s women’s basketball team this season. In their game against Waldorf earlier this month, the Dutch women had a double digit lead for a majority of the second half, only to see it squandered into a one point loss. The same story happened against AIB in their next game, however, Central was the team that was down early in the second half only to come storming back to take a late lead, but couldn’t pull away until two clutch free throws by Nicole Strasko iced the game in literally the final second of the contest. Head women’s coach for Central, Mike Jacobsma, said that in one of their most recent games against Bethany Lutheran, a 78 – 48 blowout victory for the Dutch, they were eating up most of the shot clock with a lead later on in the ballgame, which forced their opponents to sometimes to make poor defensive choices and Central was able to convert those into easy baskets thanks to smart passing. Earlier in the season, according to Jacobsma, the story was quick possessions from his team as the second half dwindled down, which allowed opponents to claw their way back. After Central’s Friday win over St. Scholastica put them at 7 – 3 on the year, they will have one final tune-up before starting Iowa Conference play, and that’s a trip to Monmouth on Wednesday.
