With a group of young girls on the varsity team this year, Kevin Van Maanen’s Pella Christian girls’ basketball team is starting to finally see the game slow down for them. Coach Van Maanen told KNIA/KRLS Sports that the girls had been having some troubles with the back court press and were trying to push things maybe a tad too fast. Recently, however, his girls have done a great job of combating that, and most recently in their game against Western Christian, were able to limit their turnovers on the press. The Eagles’ head coach singled out sophomore Tessa Howerzyl as a player who really stepped up her game last Saturday on the road, as well as senior Jora VanderHart, who Van Maanen said did a great job of really attacking the basketball throughout the game. Their loss to Western Christian was the Eagles’ first of the season on the girls’ side of the court, who holds a 6 – 1 record heading into 2013.
