Senior Hugen Leading the Way for Sabers’ Girls Basketball

Over-eclipsing the one thousand point mark in her first game of the season against Pleasantville, Twin Cedars girls’ basketball starter Alee Hugen has been a force to be reckoned with in the six games the Sabers have played so far. Hugen has amassed 114 points through six games, which is an average of 19 points per game, on 67 percent shooting, while at the same time, grabbing 58 rebounds, which also leads the team. Head coach, Justin Nolte, said that he remembers a talk he had with Alee during last week’s game against Davis County as a point of pride, because she had to change up her style of play to score against a much taller Mustangs team.
“They had a couple post players that are 5’11”, 6’, that we’re not accustomed to seeing,” Nolte said. “Those kids are physical, too. I think her first five or six shots were blocked. She did not score a single point in the first quarter. Once we had a little discussion about ball faking, she started to shot fake, I think she really took over the game, I thought, inside.”
Hugen finished with 27 points in that game against Davis County. Interesting to note, is that Twin Cedars was outscored in that first quarter, 8 – 6, after shutting out Hugen. Nolte said that he’s looking at the rest of his seniors to step up on offense and defense if Hugen is having an off night. The Sabers’ girls will next play Saturday with the boys at home against Iowa Christian Academy.
