Pella Christian’s basketball squads begin their return-home flight through the Little Hawkeye Conference this evening, hosting the Cardinals of Newton. The Eagles’ girls are working on a three-game win streak, but haven’t played since last Tuesday when they beat Grinnell on the road. In their first match-up this season, Pella Christian was able to knock off the Cardinals 45 – 34 back in December, and Coach Kevin Van Maanen says that not a lot has really changed about Newton since then.
“They’re pretty much the same, probably since the last time we played them,” Van Maanen said. “They’re a good defensive minded team. They’ve got Kaylie Rhoads, we’ve got to contain her. I know we didn’t play sharp in that game either, so I think we can play a lot better in this game.”
The Cardinals are 4 – 9 entering play this evening while the Eagles are 10 – 3. Pella Christian’s boys have won four straight, and face a Newton team that has lacked consistency on offense. What scoring they do come up with seems to come from just three players, led by Tyler Wood who averages around 11 points per game for the 4 – 8 Cardinals’ boys. Tonight’s doubleheader will be streamed live on KNIAKRLS.com, with Jamie Brockman calling the game, starting with pregame coverage at 6:00 p.m. There will also be a delayed broadcast of the hardwood action on 92.1 KRLS immediately following the Pella High doubleheader.
