After beating the Pella High Little Dutch in their last non-conference game of the regular season, the PCM Mustangs boys’ basketball team will again join forces with the girls for doubleheader Heart of Iowa Conference action at home tonight against Gilbert. The girls are 5 – 6 following their loss to Nevada last Friday, and are looking to pull back to even overall and in the conference. Gilbert enters with a 7 – 2 record in the Heart of Iowa Conference, and are 7 – 5 overall. The Tigers don’t have the best offense, but they don’t need much with the caliber of defense they play, allowing opponents to score on average 38 points per game. On the boys’ side, the Mustangs are 10 – 1 and only have conference games the rest of the way. Coach Fred Lorensen says that regardless of the opponent, his team needs to come ready to play each night, because, as he explains, the Heart of Iowa Conference is only as strong as its weakest link.
“Our conference is very, very good from top to bottom,” Lorensen said. “The best example, Colfax-Mingo, we beat them by five points, and they’re right now tied for last and have a very good team. Anybody on a given night can beat you if you don’t play well, so there’s no let up at all.”
Tonight’s doubleheader on the hardwood will be streamed live at kniakrls.com with Justin Webster calling the action from Monroe, with the pregame show starting at 5:45 p.m., and tip-off at 6:00.
