Pella Christian got the season sweep over LHC foe Newton winning both games by almost identical lopsided scores as the girls won 65-38 and the boys got a 65-34 win. The Eagle girls jumped out to a 24-7 lead after one quarter of play thanks to three long-range baskets from Paige Engbers, which set the tone early. Engbers led all scorers with 22 points, including a total of six three’s. Cori Uitermarkt was her usual force inside with 18 and Tessa Howerzyl stepped up with 13 points. The boys’ game was very similar as Pella Christian jumped out to a 14-4 lead after one quarter and it appeared they would start to close the door early, but Newton battled back within seven points at halftime. The second half was all Pella Christian, however, as they outscored the Cardinals 19-5 in the third, and the rest was academic. Coach Larry Hessing said the difference between the first and second half for his team was offensive patience. Austin Vermeer led all scorers with 16 points, Riley Stursma added 11 and Sebastian Baugh chipped in 10 for the Eagles. The Pella Christian girls upped their season record to 11-3 and 6-1 in LHC play while the boys are now 11-4 and 6-1 in conference play. Both teams take the show on the road to Oskaloosa Friday night where the girls’ game will feature the top two teams in the LHC.
