The Pella High basketball teams rode strong first quarter performances as long as they could, and came back to win in each contest over visiting Grinnell Thursday night. The Lady Dutch started their game on a 7 – 0 run and hit their first four shots from the field and rode that hot shooting to a 22 – 11 advantage. Grinnell would not lie down, coming back to take a one point lead into the half on a last second three by Jackie Johnson, who had 13 off the bench for the Tigers. Grinnell led by as much as seven in the fourth quarter, and after trading one point leads late in the game, Jackie Sunderman hit two big free throws with under a minute to give Pella a 53 – 52 lead. The Tigers had one final chance, and that’s when Allie DeMuelenaere came up with her biggest rebound of the game and was fouled. She sank one of two free throws to give her 11 points, and Grinnell failed to get a shot off, allowing the Lady Dutch to escape with a 54 – 52 win. Jessica Holterhaus led all scorers with 17. The win propels the Pella girls to a 3 – 7 record and 1 – 3 in conference play. It was the same story for the boys’ game; the Little Dutch got off to a roaring 24 – 14 start and led by as many as 15 in the first half, mostly thanks to Bryce Bortscheller draining five shots from downtown in the opening 16 minutes, and Pella had a 40 – 33 lead going into the break. They would lead through most of the second half despite cooling down from the field, until early in the fourth quarter, when the Tigers took a four point lead. The Little Dutch fought back and tied it up with five seconds left at 56 a side. Isaac Naaktgeboren took the ball and drew a foul with two ticks on the clock. He made both free throws and finished with 12, as the Little Dutch ran away with a 58 – 56 victory. Bortscheller had 24 for the game. The Pella boys are now 7 – 3 and 3 – 1 in the Little Hawkeye Conference. The Little and Lady Dutch get right back at it tonight for another conference game, this time against a gritty Norwalk team.
