Pella went to Newton and left with a split as the girls fell 47-37 and the boys held on to win 48-47 in Little Hawkeye Conference action last night. Leading scorer, Jessica Holterhaus, left the game early in the third and never returned. That loss was noticeable, as Pella was outscored in the period 19-3 to all but seal the win for Newton. Mackenzie Gustafson led Pella off the bench with 10 points. The boys’ game was a thriller from the start. Following a timeout, with Pella clinging to a one point lead in the fourth quarter, Pella’s defense forced Newton to run the clock down to just three seconds remaining before a three pointer from Tyler Wood from the left corner bounced off the rim as time expired and allowed Pella to hold on for the win. Pella coach Mark Core said a mistake on defense almost cost them the win.

Isaac Naaktgeboren and Sean Rennich combined to score 38 of Pella’s 48 points as Naaktgeboren scored 25 and Rennich added 13 off the bench. The Lady Dutch fell to 4 – 8 overall and 2 – 4 in the conference, while the boys improved to 8-4 and 4-2 in LHC play and each will travel to Oskaloosa on Friday night.
