It took double overtime, but the Pella High girls’ basketball team got their biggest win to date this season, upsetting Oskaloosa, the 14th ranked team in Class 4A on Friday night by a final of 56 – 51.

The game was tied at 38 at the end of regulation, but each team had a chance to win. Oskaloosa was fouled with ten seconds to play, but missed both free throws. The Lady Dutch went down to the other end and barely missed a short shot to win the game as time expired.

In the first overtime, the Indians got out to a big five point lead, but Pella would come storming back to force a second overtime. After both teams swapped leads throughout the second overtime, Osky held a two point lead with :30 remaining, but a three pointer by Allie Demeulenaere gave Pella the lead right back. Mackenzie Gustafson blocked an Osky shot on the next posession, then sealed the win with free throws in the final seconds.

Pella was led by Jessica Holterhaus who had 12 points and 12 rebounds, Sheldon Rozenberg grabbed 11 rebounbds and seven members of the team scored for the Lady Dutch, including four in double figures. Pella held Oskaloosa’s leading scorer Kenna Veldhuizen scoreless through three full quarters, but she finished with 16 points and eclipsed the 1000 point mark for her career.

Over on the boys’ side, the Little Dutch had a tad bit easier time with the Indians, winning 64 – 34. Nathan Clayberg grabbed 13 rebounds, ten in the first half, while Isaac Naaktgeboren was again a beast on offense, scoring 17.

The Lady Dutch are 5 – 8, while the boys are now 9 – 4. Pella’s girls play today against PCM, and the Little Dutch will wait until Tuesday to travel to Washington for a non-conference doubleheader.
