Marion County Environmental Health is holding a program tonight to warn residents about the dangers of radon. Environmental Health Manager Cory Frank says tonight’s program is part of Radon Action Month. Radon is a naturally occurring element that’s found in particularly significant amounts in soils in Iowa and the Dakotas. Frank says radon can leak into homes through foundations cracks and sub-pumps. There are thought to be no short-term effects, but he explains long-term exposure has been linked to lung cancer. Frank says they’ll be handing out free testing kits during the program and will talk about how to mitigate those dangers. The event takes place at 7:30pm tonight at the Marion County Public Health Building on North Lincoln.
