In the quarterfinal round of the Bluegrass Conference girls’ basketball tournament, both Twin Cedars and Melcher-Dallas notched first round wins last night. Twin Cedars handily beat Mormon Trail, 58 – 15, thanks to a 26 – 5 first quarter. The Sabers were up 54 – 14 at the end of three, when Coach Justin Nolte sent in his reserves. Alee Hugen single-handedly outscored Mormon Trail with 19 points of her own, while sophomore Elizabeth Rowley chipped in ten off the bench. The Saints had a more tightly contested battle on their hands against four seed Lamoni, but prevailed by a bucket, 41 – 39. Moravia and Murray each won their contests, so Twin Cedars will travel to Murray to face the three seeded Mustangs, while the Saints will also head to Murray to face top-seeded Moravia. Each game will take place on Thursday. Tonight, it will be the boys’ turn to square off in round one of their tournament, with the Sabers seeking revenge against Diagonal, while the Saints play host to Moulton-Udell.
