The Iowa DOT has begun implementing a law that allows veterans to have a “veteran” designation placed on their driver’s licenses or state IDs. Governor Branstad signed the bill that originated from the Senate last year. Many businesses across the country have discounts for veterans, but some require proper identification. This will allow veterans to show that proof without carrying around official military papers.

Conrad Nelson, with the Knoxville American Legion, says he thinks this will help create more awareness for veterans about available discounts. He says he’s been able to use his VA card in the past, receiving discounts of 10-15% at department stores and even at state attractions in Colorado.
