Neither Central basketball team could figure out how to hold onto a late lead in their ballgames on Saturday, as they each fell to the hands of Wartburg. The women held the Knights to 16 points in the first half and carried a six-point lead into the locker room. The second half was a game of runs, as each team would consecutively rattle off six, eight, and nine points at a time that eventually ended in a 48-all tie at the end of regulation. Wartburg would outscore Central 7 – 1 in the extra five minutes to win 55 – 49. Alyssa Schwartz dropped in 14 points to lead the team, while Bry Pierce had ten, which included a three-pointer. The women drop to 10 – 11 overall and 3 – 7 in the conference. The men couldn’t hold onto their five point lead late in the game and allowed Wartburg to drain eight shots from downtown in a 76 – 70 loss. Jacob Winkler dominated the game in the post with a 21-point effort on 9-of-17 shooting. The Central men drop their record to 9 – 11 with a 2 – 8 conference mark. With only five games left in the season, both Dutch squads will almost need to win out in order to make the Iowa Conference tournament in a few weeks. Next up is a trip to Decorah to face Luther on Wednesday.
