Hugs, high-fives, and huge comebacks were the theme as Pella High hosted the Newton Cardinals Friday night in a girls/boys doubleheader. Pella’s girls found themselves trailing Newton 14-4 at the end of the first quarter, and continued looking lost as the deficit expanded to 22-8 at the half. In the third, Pella pulled out their press and started punishing the Cardinals defensively, while outscoring the visitors 15-5 offensively. The offensive outburst continued into the final period as Pella outscored Newton 16-4 en route to a 39-31 victory. Leading all scorers was Jessica Holterhaus who tallied 14 total points; also in double figures was Mackenzie Gustafson who added a dozen. Next up for the Lady Dutch, is a first round postseason match-up Wednesday the 13th at Norwalk. The second game of the doubleheader proved to be just as stressful for the Pella boys’ coaching staff. The gentlemen struggled early offensively, tallying three points in the entire first period. A resurgent third quarter for Pella, comparable to the effort the girls gave, put the boys squad right back in the contest 32-28. Pella was able to outscore Newton in the fourth, before they fell 44 – 43. Accumulating 21 of Pella’s 43 total points was Jordan Pingle, who led all scorers. Next up for the Pella High boys is a visit from Centerville in the regular season finale Tuesday night.
