Dubuque took it to both the Central men’s and women’s basketball teams early and never let up, sweeping the Iowa Conference doubleheader on Saturday. Mollie Whiting for the Spartans continued her league dominance, scoring 28 points to lead her team to a 66 – 43 victory over the Dutch. Turnovers were the Achilles heel for Central early, and the possessions they did get shots off, they could not find the bottom of the net. Kenzie Vander Molen had 13 points for Central to lead the now 10 – 13 Dutch, who also drop to 3 – 9 in the conference with two games to play, and are also two games behind the sixth seed for the league tournament. The Central men did not play much better, losing their contest 69 – 50. It appeared again that a big lid had glued itself over the hoop for the Dutch, who could were 2-of-18 from the perimeter. Matt Greenfield had 13 points, Jacob Winkler scored 12, and Branden Stubbs punched in 11 for the reeling Dutch men. Central falls to 2 – 10 in Iowa Conference play with Loras and Simpson coming up next week at home to wrap up the regular season. The games are must-win for the Central men, as all three schools are fighting for the sixth and final seed in the league tournament.
