As Catholic Cardinals begin to gather at the Vatican to elect the new pope, no one knows what exactly to expect. That’s what Father Stephen Ebel at St. Anthony’s Church in Knoxville explains. Ebel says often times, those who seem the most likely to become the new pope have not been selected. He says that the College of Cardinals will spend time reflecting and looking for guidance from the Holy Spirit, but adds there’s also some politicking involved as well. No matter who the new pope is, Ebel says they’ll face a variety of challenges. In some areas of the world, the Church is seeing growth, while in others, it is seeing declining attendance. Benedict the Sixteenth will step down on February 28th. During the last papal conclave, it took four ballots over two days to elect Benedict.
