A Central College Professor of Biology has been working with a few students to study the effects of chemicals found in tap water on fish. Ellen Du Pre along with four of her students have focused on the effects of Triclosan on heart rates. The team has found that when exposed to this chemical, which can make its way into tap water sources through disinfecting soaps, zebrafish have lower heart rates. They have hypothesized that this may be linked to decreases in metabolism. The research has been chosen by the National Council on Undergraduate Research to be presented at their 2013 conference.
