Pella Regional Health Center has introduced some new technology into their obstetrics unit to keep newborns safe. The “Hugs Infant Protection System” uses ankle tags placed on infants. The tags will alert staff through their paging system if an infant is taken out of the obstetrics unit. The system also checks the infant’s heartbeat and sounds an alarm if there is an irregularity. Karen Westercamp at PRHC says that they are the first hospital in the US to use this system, and it would allow nurses to respond quickly to the correct area if an alarm is sounded.
