A Knoxville man is facing five counts of Assault with Dangerous weapon after an incident in Oskaloosa this weekend. Matthew Fletcher also faces an operating while intoxicated charge. Oskaloosa police were dispatched to the 400 block of 4th Ave East late Sunday night at a report of a person attempting to run over pedestrians with a vehicle and firing gun shots. The driver of that vehicle was later identified as Fletcher.
On scene, witnesses told police they felt as if Fletcher had been intentionally trying to hit them. One subject said he was struck by the vehicle, something other witnesses also told police. A passenger in the vehicle told police Fletcher had been driving recklessly, striking a parked vehicle and driving toward subjects through yards and sidewalks. Police say Fletcher was uncooperative. He eventually gave a breath test more than an hour after the alleged incident; that test indicated a blood alcohol content of 0.143. Fletcher faces a hearing on May 23rd in Mahaska County Court. Police say they could find no evidence that shots had been fired.
