Governor Terry Branstad signed into law a piece of legislation last week updating state code regarding landlords and tenants. Representative Greg Heartsill managed the bill on the house floor; the bill passed unanimously in the house and senate. The law updates damages that landlords and tenants can receive, as well as allows tenants to be charged with criminal mischief if they intentionally damage property they rent. Heartsill says a lot of work went into the bill behind the scenes to get the various groups on board and to muster strong bi-partisan support.
