Monday is Memorial Day. It’s a day set aside annually to remember and commemorate those that fallen while serving and protecting this country. Memorials started Friday morning in Marion County with a flag raising ceremony at Graceland Cemetery. Marion County Veterans Affairs Director Mike Kuhn says it’s important to have such a ceremony at Graceland Cemetery to both honor those who died for our freedom as well as pass those ideals onto the next generation. Memorial Day was first celebrated after the Civil War to honor soldiers who died in the Civil War, but has since expanded to honor all soldiers who have died. A memorial service is being hosted at the Pella Memorial Building at 2pm today.
