Health care institutions across the nation are celebrating National Nurses Week. At Knoxville Hospital and Clinics, Director of Emergency Services Amy Hook says she’s grateful that she switched careers and became a nurse more than a decade ago. Hook was previously a district supervisor for a convenience store chain. She says that after finishing her nursing education, she started working in an intensive care unit in Des Moines, where she became what she calls an “adrenaline junkie.” After deciding to go into management, she was hired in Knoxville about 10 months ago. Hook says she enjoys the fast-paced world of emergency care, saying that nurses always focus on the ABCs when a critical patient comes in – airwaves, breathing, and circulation. She adds that to her and many other nurses, nursing is a passion, and not a career.
