Four girls from Marion County schools will play in the class 1A State Individual Tennis Tournament. Pella Christian’s Paige Engbers and Veronica Francis defeated Knoxville’s Kassie Griggs and Taylor Carter in the championship match six/one…and six/two. Engbers and Francis got to the finals by defeating Centerville…the Knoxville duo of Paige Spowart and Shamene Norman…and a Fairfield team before meeting Griggs and Carter. Griggs and Carter’s road to the title match consisted of defeating Pella Christian’s Jora Vander Hart and Anna Vander Molen…followed by wins over Davis County and Albia. The Pella High team of Sami Waasenaar and Molly Kalkwarf won their first round match over Albia…but lost in the quarterfinals to Fairfield. Pella other duo of Bri Buzick and Emily Vander Werff fell to a team from Oskaloosa in the first round of play. In singles competition…Pella’s Morgan Ernst got third place while her teammate Zoe Vermeer got fourth. The 1A State Meet is at the Prairie Ridge Sports Complex in Ankeny May 30th and 31st.
