Central College professor of computer science Robert Franks was awarded the Kenneth J. Weller Distinguished Professorship of the Liberal Arts at the May 11 commencement ceremony. The three-year endowed chair recognizes distinguished faculty and provides support for teaching, research, and scholarship. The Weller Chair was founded in 1993, and Franks is the eighth recipient. It is named after Ken Weller, president of Central College from 1969-1990. Among Weller’s achievements was the creation of the NCAA Division III athletics philosophy, in which intercollegiate sports are seen as existing for the benefit of the participants, rather than the spectators.
