Playing for third place and a little bit of bragging rights, the Pella High boys’ soccer team fell in the very late stages of the Class 2A State Consolation game on Saturday to Waverly-Shell Rock, 1 – 0. The GoHawks came out very aggressive in the first twenty minutes, having several scoring opportunities go for naught due to several defensive stands by the Little Dutch. The Pella boys turned up their intensity the rest of the game, with the best shot coming late in the second half, with a ball that was inside the crossbars but not far enough back to be counted as a goal, as a GoHawk was able to boot it out just in time to perhaps save the game for Waverly-Shell Rock. The game-winning goal came via a header with just under 1:30 left in the game that just got past the outstretched arms of goalie Ben Robertson. Pella’s boys finish the season with a record of 14 – 7 – 2 and took home some hardware for a fourth place finish in the state in Class 2A boys’ soccer.
