Varicose veins affect an estimated 25 million Americans. A new laser treatment being conducted by Dr. Matt Morgan, general surgeon at Pella Regional Health Center inserts a thin fiber into the damaged vein. A laser light is then emitted through the fiber, delivering just the right amount of energy. The targeted tissue reacts with the light energy, causing the vein to close and seal shut. Many times, varicose veins are a visible sign of a greater health problem. There can be swelling, pain, itching and other issues. Gender, genetics, aging and job type also put some people at greater risk.
