Though they did drop their first round district playoff game to Colfax-Mingo on Saturday, a big part of the success Pella Christian’s baseball team had in the first part of the season was due to their defense and pitching. In his first year at the helm of the Eagles, Nate Johnson, as a former pitcher himself, preached his team about limiting mistakes and giving the opponents as few extra outs as possible. Johnson added that the new bats may be just two ounces heavier to be deemed legal, but that makes a big difference for each side of the ball. The Eagles finished the year with a mark of 14 – 17.
