The bottom of the order was the offensive catalyst for the Pella Christian baseball team last night, and the Eagles just edged PCM 7 – 6. The 5 – 9 hitters went 8-for-13 at the plate with five RBI’s for the Eagles. Each team scored a run in the second inning, but the Eagles blew it open for a moment in the fourth with four runs highlighted by a two-run single by Dillon Branderhorst. The Mustangs scored two in the fifth to get within two, and after Pella Christian answered back with two of their own, PCM scored three in the sixth to get within one, before Caleb Morgan closed the door on the mound with a four out save in relief of Andrew VanderHart’s strong five-inning performance. Coach Nate Johnson said after the game that the bottom of the order did a great job of finding pitches to drive when ahead in the count. Mustangs’ coach, Shaun Hudnut said that their pitcher, Tyler Townsend, did a good job last night and did everything they’ve taught him in his young career so far. The Eagles’ pitching staff recorded a total of 13 strikeouts to make the job relatively easy for their defense. Pella Christian is now 13 – 16 on the season while the loss drops PCM’s record to 18 – 13. Each team is off for the weekend and will be back at it next week, when the Eagles host Des Moines Christian on Tuesday and the Mustangs head to Saydel on Monday.
