With RAGBRAI less than a week away, area health officials are reminding those preparing food to be aware of some of the requirements. Cory Frank, with Marion County Public Health, says hand washing is among the most vital parts of keeping foodborne illnesses from spreading. He reminds street vendors that they need to have a hand washing station on-site.

Frank says another key is that anyone who feels even a little sick should stay away from the food. He explains this is something those who work in the food industry have a lot of experience in, but worries volunteers may try to tough out an illness. Even if you feel somewhat up-beat, Frank says you can find ways to help out without serving or being near the food.

Finally, Frank says to keep your hot foods hot and your cold foods cold, and keep log sheets for employees or volunteers serving in your station. He explains that these are all things the Department of Inspection and Appeals will be looking at while inspecting and helping vendors.
