The wet spring has brought ticks out in abundant numbers. Judi Van Hulzen, at Marion County Public Health, says repellent with DEET is effective in preventing ticks from latching on. If you do find a tick on yourself, someone else, or even a pet, Van Hulzen says to pull up gently on the tick with a pair of tweezers and tent the skin. Sometimes, the tick will let go itself. If not, you may have to pull. She adds that you shouldn’t use any twisting motions. She also says to watch your pets. Even if you use good tick repellent, ticks may still get in their hair without latching on and could enter your home.
