All eyes are on RAGBRAI, but the City of Knoxville is also getting ready for a big project downtown soon afterward. Last week, the City Council awarded the Streetscape project bid to Hawkeye Paving Corporation of Bettendorf. City Manager Harold Stewart explains that the contract allows them to begin construction on July 29th, but it likely won’t get started until later. He says the contractor plans on meeting with downtown business owners to hear their concerns soon. This is phase two of the streetscape project. Crews will be replacing sewer mains downtown on the square and on Robinson between 1st and 2nd Streets. If the project begins this summer, it’s scheduled to be completed by the end of 2014.
