Local cyclist, Ken De Haan, has ridden about 62,000 miles on his bicycle in his 70 years of life, but last January, after hip surgery, his future on a bicycle was in doubt. Six months later a full hip replacement, Ken is back on his bike and riding RAGBRAI from Pella to Oskaloosa with physical therapist Gene Schmitz. “My balance system was out of whack,” said De Haan. “I soon started working with Gene at Pella Regional, and we worked really hard. The worst part was learning how to get on my bike.” De Haan has only missed one RAGBRAI since 1988 and that was for a fishing trip on Lake Michigan.
