The first case of West Nile virus in Iowa this year has been confirmed. The Iowa Department of Public Health says a man in Linn County has contracted the disease. Judi Van Hulzen, at Marion County Public Health, reminds us that mosquito bites are how the disease is contracted. She talks about a couple ways you can prevent or limit those bites this summer. If you’re going out, Van Hulzen recommends insect repellent with DEET, though it should not be used on children younger than 3-years-old. If possible, she says to wear sleeves and pants outside during the times mosquitoes are active. Van Hulzen adds you should also eliminate standing water in your home and yard, including some that may collect in buckets, tires, or pool covers.
