Donny Schatz impressed even the most skeptical fan last night as he ran into the A-Main from the B and rocketed to the top of the podium for his seventh Knoxville Nationals title in eight years. It looked like Brian Brown may get his first Nationals victory as he took like like a scared rabbit and dominated the first half of the race leading by as much as three seconds. But after the mandatory fuel stop on lap 24 Schatz, who was already in fifth place after starting 21st, started to methodically inch to the top and by lap 41 caught and passed Brown. Schatz said after a frustrating week running in the B-Main was an advantage for him. Brown added that you could quote “start the guy in Oskaloosa and he’s going to have a chance” unquote. Justin Henderson completed the podium with Paul McMahan in fourth and Chad Kemenah was fifth. Danny Dietrich earned Rookie of the Nationals, Kevin Swindell won the Jesse Hockett Mr. Sprint Car Award, while Justin Henderson won for best appearing car.
