Nick Bonstell is resigning as Knoxville Fire Chief. Bonstell, who is from Michigan, tells KNIA/KRLS News that he underestimated how hard it would be for him and his family to be away from home. Bonstell says that the fault lies on him for not thinking the consequences through hard enough before accepting the position eight months ago.

Bonstell notes the decision has nothing to do with the Knoxville community. He says that the City Council and City Manager Harold Stewart have been “awesome” to work with, and the job is his dream job. Bonstell says the community has been great, and he’s had great support throughout his tenure.

Bonstell also enjoys working with the members of the Fire and Rescue Department. He says each of the 30 members has stepped up and helped build something special. Bonstell explains that they’ve worked hard and he’s blessed to have worked with such great people for eight months. He calls the Knoxville Fire and Rescue Department the strongest organization of its kind in the area and says he’s certain that momentum will continue forward after he leaves.

Bonstell’s last day will be Thursday, September 12th.
