In addition to the big amount of seniors the Pella High football team is bringing back this season, they will be returning several key components of their special teams for field goals, punts and kickoffs. They have the golden leg of Seth Johnson back, Anthony Bentzinger, who missed only one extra point all of last year, and many others on a “team” that perhaps gets not as much attention at the high school level. Coach Jay McKinstrey says that they are pivotal to the success of the entire football team. McKinstrey says he can recall several instances where special teams played an important role in wins and in losses in the past. Legendary head coach, Bear Bryant once said that you could look back at a football game and all of the things that happen in that time frame and pick out four plays that were a major factor in the end, and McKinstrey adds that their special teams could be one of those four plays very easily.
