For the last four years, the top sponsor of the Iowa State Lunabotics Club has been Vermeer Corporation. The relationship is a natural fit as the club designs and builds a robot, with many similar characteristics to Vermeer’s equipment, that has to be capable of mining the material found on the moon. They also attend many STEM outreach events reaching over 15,000 people a year, most of which are elementary, middle school, and high school students. Thanks to Vermeer’s sponsorship dollars, the team from ISU is able to purchase equipment that many competing schools cannot. This year’s squad, Team LunaCY, placed third for their outreach program, and received the Joe Kosmo Award of Excellence which is the highest award of the competition. They were also awarded the On-Site Mining Award given to the team who collects the most moon dirt. Team member David Peiffer attributes Vermeer’s level of support as the reason they are able to operate and compete at such a high level.
