Many motorcycle riders pile up miles on their bikes during the summer months, and Iowa, along with Illinois, are the only two states that do not require a helmet to be worn. 19 states have chosen to make helmets mandatory, while 27 states have an age requirement to ride without head protection. Florida and Michigan have insurance requirements along with age limitations that restrict riders. Lt. Paul Haase of the Pella PD says that Iowa did adopt a helmet law in 1968, then in 1986 repealed it to where it stands today. Statistics from the Iowa DOT show that In 2012, 56 motorcycle deaths occurred with 42 of the those riders not wearing helmets. So far in 2013, 20 motorcycle deaths have occurred, with 13 of those riding without protective headgear.
