PCE Wreck 4

A single vehicle accident occurred on westbound 163 between Pella and Leighton Friday, shortly after 3pm. The accident was triggered by the front left tire blowing out, causing the vehicle to drive into the median where it then hit a culvert. The boom of the truck dug into the bank of the median, which caused the vehicle to flip over causing the contents of the vehicle to eject over the roadway shutting down all eastbound traffic for around 15 to 20 minutes. The driver was unconscious for the duration of the extrication. He also had an apparent head injury. The driver was taken to Pella Regional where he was immediately airlifted to Mercy in Des Moines. Responding agencies included Pella Police, Pella Ambulance, Pella Fire, Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office, Mahaska County Emergency Management, and the Iowa State Patrol.
