Knoxville Hy-Vee Pharmacist Greg Clodfelter says that you should consult with a doctor before giving any over-the-counter medicines to counter your children’s allergies. He says that doctors can help especially with children younger than 12-years-old. While teenagers can generally handle over-the-counter solutions like Allegra, Zyrtec, and Claritin, doctors will have different recommendations for younger kids. When dealing with the symptoms, such as a sore throat, Clodfelter says throat lozenges are effective; if your child doesn’t like those, he recommends ibuprofen. He adds that sinus rinses like neti pot are great ways to clean out the sinus tracks.
